Estudiantes was born in a small shoe shop in La Plata, Argentina, in 1905. A group of 20 young students came together to create a football club that would challenge the dominance of the five major Argentine clubs. The club's name, Estudiantes, refers to the condition of its founders, who were students from high school and university. Estudiantes went on to become a successful club, winning the Torneio Metropolitano in 1967 and the Conmebol Libertadores in 1968, defeating Palmeiras in the final. The club's success continued with another Libertadores title in 1969, defeating Nacional, and becoming the first club to win three consecutive titles in the competition.
