Geertruida passed the medical check on Thursday, paving the way for his return to the Eredivisie. The Dutch international previously played for Feyenoord and transferred to RB Leipzig two years ago. He played 28 games for Sunderland in the Premier League, but struggled to secure a regular spot in the Leipzig team. Geertruida's time at Leipzig was marked by a stint at Sunderland, where he made 28 appearances in the Premier League.

Voetbal International reports that Geertruida was initially left out of the Dutch national team for the World Cup by Ronald Koeman, but was later added to the squad after Jurriën Timber withdrew. Geertruida played for the Dutch national team in the World Cup but did not receive any playing time. He also went on a training camp with RB Leipzig in Salzburg, but returned early.

PSV see Geertruida as a key player in their defence, with trainer Peter Bosz reportedly keen to bring him to the club. Feyenoord and Ajax also showed interest in Geertruida, but a return to Feyenoord was deemed financially unfeasible. Geertruida is now set to join PSV on loan, with the option for the club to buy him permanently.
