Nkunku's departure from Milan is expected, given his status as surplus to requirements under newly-appointed head coach Ruben Amorim. The Frenchman earned a net salary of around €5m per season, having joined Milan from Chelsea last summer for a fixed cost of €37m, plus bonuses of up to €4m-€5m. In his first season at the San Siro, Nkunku provided seven goals and three assists from 32 appearances in Serie A, as well as scoring once in the Coppa Italia.

Milan will continue to discuss the financial details of a potential deal with Leipzig over the weekend, with the Rossoneri standing firm on their valuation of €33m-€35m. The clubs are reportedly discussing a loan deal with an option to buy, which would see Nkunku return to his former club on a temporary basis, with the possibility of a permanent transfer in the future.
