Mexx Meerdink scored twice as the Netherlands beat Serbia 2-1 in Belgrade. The 23-year-old AZ striker made his first start for the senior national team.
Meerdink opened the scoring from the penalty spot. Serbia equalised through Luka Jović shortly after half-time, before Meerdink struck again in the 69th minute. He controlled a pass from substitute Guus Til and finished the winning goal.
It was only Meerdink's second international appearance. He was originally left out of the squad but received a late call-up after Donyell Malen was injured. The result gave coach Xavi Hernández his first win with the Netherlands.
