The match was stopped just before time after burning torches were thrown onto the field for the second time. The KNVB has also imposed a fine of €10,000 on NAC due to the misconduct of their fans. NAC director Remco Oversier stated that 20,000 supporters turned their backs on the small group of troublemakers.

NAC had to win the match to stay in the Eredivisie and hoped that Telstar and Volendam would drop points. However, Volendam played a 1-1 draw against Excelsior, and Telstar won 3-0 against Heracles Almelo, resulting in NAC finishing 17th and returning to the Eerste Divisie after two seasons in the Eredivisie. The KNVB's decision to impose a national stadium ban on the 24 supporters is a clear indication of the severity of the incidents that took place during the match.
