The Mineirão will have a new hybrid grass in 2027, with the current 100% natural grass being replaced. This change is required by the Fifa to ensure the grass can withstand the high volume of games during the tournament. The new grass will be made of fibers of polyethylene, which will be sewn into the natural grass, creating a hybrid surface.
The costs for the installation of the fibers are still in discussion between the government of Minas, Minas Arena, and the Fifa. The Cruzeiro football club will not participate in the cost-sharing. The exact date for the change is yet to be determined, but it is possible that it will be done after the Cruzeiro's season ends in December.
