Five clubs from Mexico's second division have filed an appeal against the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX. The clubs, which include Club Universidad de Guadalajara, Club Atlético La Paz, Club Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, and Club Deportivo de Zacatecas, are challenging Liga MX's league regulations. These regulations state that clubs in Liga MX will not be relegated to the second division, and vice versa.
A ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) paved the way for the expected return of promotion and relegation for the 2026-27 season. This decision followed a previous ruling last year, which was made in response to 10 second-tier sides suing Liga MX for reinstatement. Despite this, clubs from the second division could still apply for promotion eligibility, provided they met certain criteria, such as having a suitable stadium and sufficient finances. However, a minimum of four teams needed to have eligibility status for a certified team to move into Liga MX, a threshold that was never reached.
