He suggested that the club's approach to youth development is not effective, saying, "I think that there is no education going on." Vanenburg also stated that he thinks the club should hire the best trainers in the youth department to create a solid foundation for the team. He believes that this would be a more effective way to develop young players, rather than buying them. Vanenburg thinks that the best trainers in the youth department should be hired, saying, "I think you just need to have the best trainers in the youth." He also stated that the club should promote two or three players to the first team each year, which he believes is the key to successful youth development. The competition in which FC Utrecht participates is called VriendenLoterij Eredivisie.
