Genoa's victory was a much-needed boost for Daniele De Rossi, who was under immense pressure after one point from five rounds. The Viola were revitalised by the return of Paolo Vanoli, beating Venezia and holding Napoli to a draw. However, they struggled to cope with Genoa's aggressive start.

Genoa had an aggressive start and opened the scoring after seven minutes when David De Gea spilled the Stephan El Shaarawy scorcher from distance. El Shaarawy also broke down the left and rolled across the face of goal, inches away from Osmajic and the far stick. Luca Ranieri had a nightmare 60 seconds when he was booked for a high tackle on Junior Messias, then hit a fresh-air clearance on the Osmajic cross from the right, allowing the Brazilian to volley in from six yards.

Fiorentina did have the ball in the net with Willy Gnonto on 19 minutes thanks to a deflection, but Beto was flagged offside in the build-up. De Gea made up for his error on the opening goal with a fantastic one-handed save on the El Shaarawy free kick, while Osmajic fired wide after gathering a long Messias ball. The second half saw Fiorentina make two changes and reshuffle their system, but they were predictable in their movement. They eventually got one back with a bit of luck when the Alex Jimenez low cross from the right was accidentally toe-poked into the near bottom corner by Johan Vasquez. However, Genoa held on to secure their first win of the season.
