The measure, which has immediate effect, also bans new deposits on betting platforms from this Friday, with users having until October 5 to withdraw their money. A bill has been sent to Congress that would classify the exploitation or operation of betting as a crime, with penalties of 4 to 6 years in prison and a fine. The Congress has 120 days to approve or reject the bill. Furthermore, the government has previously regulated these companies with a law (14.790/2023) three years ago. It is also reported that betting platforms extracted more than 60 billion reals (11.500 million dollars) from families in the last year, highlighting the issue of gambling addiction and financial debt.
