Anthony Taylor, a 47-year-old former English football referee, took charge of as many as 668 matches in England, including every domestic final and 163 internationals. He was the man in the middle for Spain's 1-0 win over Portugal in the World Cup round of 16 match. Taylor's decision to step away from refereeing was influenced by the pressure and scrutiny he faced, which took a toll on his mental and physical health.
Taylor explained that referees face numerous challenges, including fear of making mistakes, external opinion, and self-doubt. He stated that he was confident in his coping mechanisms but felt that his body and mind were ready to take on a new challenge. He has decided to leave refereeing and take on a completely different role as director of elite refereeing for the Turkish Football Federation.
Taylor's decision was also influenced by the levels of abuse he received from fans, including a famous incident at the 2023 Europa League final in Budapest Airport. His family and friends made serious sacrifices over the years for him to do what he does, and Taylor wanted to decide when he finished on his own terms. He feels that there's no better place to finish than at the World Cup, where he was involved in Spain's 1-0 win over Portugal.
